Nell Scott Park – Beechmont

Who was Nell Scott?

Ever wondered as you drive by the little park in Beechmont (that is named Nell Scott Park) — who exactly was Nell Scott?

This park is located on the Beechmont & Binna Burra roads between the fire shed and the community centre at the Nerang, Canungra, Binna Burra roundabout.

Nell Scott was a remarkable person, who operated, for 53 years from 1922 to 1975, the “unofficial” Beechmont Post Office (which was located near the park).

Not only did Nell Scott run the Beechmont post office for over 50 years, she was awarded with a Certificate as a ‘Record and in Appreciation of Patriotic Response to the Call of Country by Service with the Volunteer Air Observer Corps’ for her services during World War II, as an official aeroplane “spotter” indentifying any aircraft passing over.

In June 2012 Mrs Iris Rankin (herself from an original Beechmont pioneering family) requested Beechmont Area Progress Association (BAPA) approach Council for permission to place an information plaque, on a rock plinth, detailing Nell Scott’s contribution to Beechmont.

Six years ago BAPA did approach Council and the usual answer from Council was given, “sure if the Community creates it, installs it and & pays for it, there is no Council budgeted money for items such as these at Beechmont”.

At the BAPA meeting on 13 August 2018 this matter was once again discussed and BAPA will now endeavour to gain a community grant to make this happen, however we need some help from you the Beechmont Community because all our information on Nell Scott has been gleamed from the “Taming a Plateau – A history of the Beechmont District” a publication complied and edited by Robert Longhurst, first published in 1992. Please see attached document that was created in June 2012 for Council.

If you know any additional details regarding Nell’s significant pioneering contribution to Beechmont or you can help in anyway please make contact with BAPA, by phone 07 5551 0361, by post or email (info@beechmont.org.au) or personally visit the Beechmont monthly Market (3rd Sunday of each month) at the Community Centre 1835 Beechmont Rd and make yourself known to a BAPA member.
